“The time is always ripe to do right,” maintained Nelson Mandela, and Bigen Africa heartily agrees as they seize every opportunity to “do good while doing business”!

On Mandela Day – 18 July – the Bigen Africa employees at the different branches across South Africa, made an extra effort to reach out to those in need and bring happy smiles to their faces. We all know that “doing good” is a feel-good mission which warms the heart, but some of the branches also made sure that there was fun to be had on some unique projects!

The Bigen Africa Pretoria office employees set out to hand-knit 500 scarves within a week for the residents of the TKSO home for the aged and the Pholoso drop-off care centre. This is not to be confused with “knitting by hand” – there were no needles in sight as those long, chunky scarves magically appeared from deft hands! Even the guys did a great job!

Cape Town, joined by Shiloh Energy, embarked on its own “amazing race”, which had small teams dashing around on a mystery tour by car, with only clues on a map to guide them. Making pit stops at various destinations, they completed helpful tasks such as painting, hanging doors or playing with children.

East London employees dedicated a good amount of time to purchase and neatly pack a big batch of sanitary care hampers for distribution amongst various schools in the region. Learning is important, of course, but quality of life comes first!

Durban employees fulfilled a mission of great importance – the provision of potable water to 420 families in the Emalangeni, Cibane and Wosiane areas in KwaZulu-Natal, where drought has been a serious problem. The team was happy to provide the muscle power needed and open their wallets as well!

Bloemfontein employees spread the Madiba magic at the Vrystaat Nasorgsentrum, a residential facility for mentally challenged adults, by refurbishing and transforming the interior into an attractive, inviting place.

The most valuable legacy that former President Nelson Mandela has left us is his plea for everyone to have a positive effect on those around them, particularly people in need.

On Mandela Day, we all have the opportunity to show that we uphold, along with Madiba, the values of democracy, freedom, equality and respect for human dignity. For Bigen Africa the spirit of the day resonates with the company’s creed of “doing good while doing business” and  to go out there and change lives for the better!
